Throwing it back to 2012 in the Red Bull Rampage history books as we revisit one of the most iconic races the event has ever seen. From Gee Atherton's crash in quali's to Cam Zink's injured heel, the 2012 edition was full of surprises as riders rolled into one of the sketchiest events yet.

It takes skill, bravery and some may argue a little bit of lunacy to descend down 1,500 feet of vertical while hitting obstacles and attempting tricks in the desert of Virgin, Utah.

If you add the fact that riders start their runs on the highest point for a freeride event then you’ll understand why riders are equally exhilarated and terrified when they compete at Rampage.

The 2012 edition of Rampage was the best yet with an exceptionally high standard of riding seen on finals day. Some of the expected front runners in the 20-man final field had trouble finishing their runs cleanly. Brandon Semenuk, Darren Berrecloth and James Doerfling all crashed when attempting big tricks.

However that shouldn’t detract from the consistent riding of Canada’s Kurt Sorge, the winner of Red Bull Rampage 2012. Sorge put down two great runs with his second run being even better than his first run. His first run had led the standings after all the riders went down the first time.

Sorge’s second run included a huge superman over a jump and a big backflip drop. Judges were also aware that Sorge took the most creative line of all the riders taking part on finals day.

There were surprises also in second and third place with event rookie Antoine Bizet of France taking second and local Utah rider Logan Binggeli coming third.
